Some historical notes on the masserie of Apulia
The masseria (they are called masserì or massarì, while massàre or massère is called the guardian of the masseria) is a set of rural buildings used as dwellings, animal shelter and support for the owners of farms typical of Southern Italy; the term derives from the word 'masserizie' (furnishings, furniture, tools for agricultural and pastoral use, grain stores, food stores for people and animals) which were stored and protected inside large, typical stone and/or brick buildings, where farmers, farm owners, peasants and shepherds lived. Some, owned by families of noble origin and high wealth, were also fortified and equipped with defensive walls and towers.
